Creative Development Studio

You may be feeling the shift.

The tools have changed. Production has been democratized. The question is no longer whether you can make something — it's whether you can see something worth making.

Execution is strong. You can deliver. But the skills that once guaranteed advancement are being commoditized. What's needed now is deeper: vision, discernment, authorship.

This is the era of the creative director. This Studio exists to help you become one.

What it is

An apprenticeship container for creatives ready to level up their trajectory through deeper development. This is a developmental process for mid career creatives and emerging creative leaders navigating a threshold in their practice. We work through your real world projects. Not hypothetical briefs.
You bring the work that is alive:
  • Concepts
  • Pitch decks
  • Designs
  • Writing
And together, we shape the thinking inside the work while it’s in motion.

How it works

This is an intimate, 1:1 developmental container. Each participant works directly with me in live virtual working sessions focused on their projects and trajectory. There is no group curriculum or shared critique format.
Sessions move between:
  • Concept development
  • Narrative shaping
  • Creative direction
  • Presentation articulation
  • Voice strengthening
The dialogue stays close to your work and developmental edge.

Who it’s for

This Studio may resonate if you are:
  • Mid career and feeling a shift in your practice
  • Strong in execution but seeking deeper thinking
  • Stepping into creative direction
  • Refining your voice as a leader
  • Feeling plateaued and looking for the right catalyst to reach the next level
  • Navigating what creative value and authorship mean in an era of generative tools

The work unfolds across four layers:

Craft

Sharpening execution within live projects.

Strong craft is still the foundation — but what it means to be skilled is evolving. Execution alone no longer differentiates; intentionality does. This layer focuses on the quality of your decision-making inside the work: how you develop taste alongside technique, how you refine without losing energy, and how you move from competent to considered. We work inside your live projects to sharpen not just what you make, but how you think while you're making it.

Concept

Strengthening the thinking beneath the surface.

The most powerful work begins with a strong idea — one that's been examined, challenged, and shaped with clarity. This layer develops your ability to move beneath the surface of a project and understand what it's really trying to say or do. We work on the architecture of your thinking: how you frame problems, how you build a case for an idea, and how you bring rigor to the conceptual layer of your practice. When the thinking is strong, the work becomes easier to direct and easier to defend.
When generation is effortless and options are infinite, the ability to edit — to know what to keep, what to cut, and what is truly yours — has become the defining creative skill. Discernment is the capacity to hold a vision steady against the pressure of feedback, iteration, and possibility. It's what allows a creative director to say yes or no with conviction, and to know the difference between refinement and drift. This is one of the most underdeveloped capacities in mid-career creatives, and one of the highest-leverage things to build.

Discernment

Developing the editorial eye that separates signal from noise.

Voice

Clarifying what is uniquely yours to say and make.

As generated work becomes ubiquitous, a distinctive creative intelligence becomes rare — and increasingly valuable. Voice is not a style or a personal brand; it's the accumulation of your perspective, sensibility, and point of view made legible across the work. This layer focuses on identifying and amplifying what is authentically yours, so that your work carries a signature that cannot be prompted or replicated. When voice is clear, authorship follows — and so does the kind of creative leadership that is genuinely irreplaceable.

What cannot be prompted

Capacities That Compound

This is not traditional coaching. And it’s not a portfolio review. The focus is on developing creative capacity through the work itself — the capacities that compound over time and cannot be generated, prompted, or outsourced. They are not learnable from AI. They emerge through relationship, live work, and a practiced eye.

What

Emerges

Over time, participants often experience:

  • Greater clarity in their creative stance

  • Stronger articulation of ideas

  • Increased confidence directing work

  • More coherence across projects

  • A clearer sense of authorship

As creative capacity expands, career trajectory often follows.

Many participants use this container to:

  • Prepare for senior creative roles

  • Strengthen promotion cases

  • Build confidence in leadership conversations

  • Develop signature thinking

  • Increase their strategic value within organizations

Voices from the Work

  • "I have a completely different quality of confidence — a depth of confidence — knowing I can speak to Joel along my creative pathway when I have hang-ups, big questions, or big ideas that need to come back down to Earth. He has such a storied career, with so many experiences on the ground with people — a real understanding of what creates transformation, what wakes people up and invites them to engage. It's easy in design to think you've got it all figured out in your head, but it takes someone who's been there across all kinds of situations to have that mature sense of what will actually work. Having Joel keep me honest in my storytelling gives me so much more confidence in being bold and putting work out into the world."

    — Benji Ross, Founder of Awakening Lands

  • “Joel’s impact on my creative leadership journey is profound. Early in my career, he helped me round out my technical and analytical abilities with the elusive but critical skills of storytelling and creative vision. I have relied on these foundational frameworks daily for years. They haven't just fueled my own leadership trajectory—they’ve empowered me to pay that mentorship forward to the teams I lead today.”

    — Pavani Yalla, VP of AR Experiences @ Magic Leap

  • "Joel is a gifted creative leader. He gives the best feedback of anyone I’ve ever worked for. Regardless of the creative discipline, he always cuts straight to the heart of what’s most interesting and helps coax these ideas out of us in a form that can be easily digested by clients. He’s relentlessly committed to containing the “swirl” that accompanies creative work. Even on the most complicated projects, he always finds ways to simplify, continually bringing the team back to next steps that feel doable and even fun. His even-keeled demeanor is a steadying presence, even when pressure mounts, and you can always count on him to be real. My time spent working with Joel made me a better creative, leader, and human being. I think the world of him!"

    — Kathryn Beane, Head of Story @ Elevate

  • "Working with Joel was an incredibly valuable experience. Throughout the mentorship, he helped us refine our vision, challenge our assumptions, and think more strategically. What stood out most was Joel's ability to balance encouragement with constructive feedback. His thoughtful questions encouraged us to examine our ideas from multiple perspectives and helped us better understand the needs of the people we hoped to serve. Beyond the project itself, he helped us build confidence in our decision-making and problem-solving abilities as a team. His commitment to helping us grow made a lasting impact. We highly recommend him to anyone seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated mentor."

Soohan Rai, Participant of Bhutan’s Pelsung program

  • "Joel has a unique talent to mentor people. He helped me unleash and grow a new set of skills based on things I have always felt passionate about. "

    — Mauricio Talero, Computer & Motion Graphics Artist

About Joel

I’ve spent the past 25 years as a practicing creative working across startups, agencies, and large technology organizations.

Alongside my own design practice and creative leadership, I’ve consistently mentored and developed multidisciplinary creatives across physical and digital design, digital products, spatial experiences, and immersive storytelling.

This has included supporting visual, product, and experience designers, writers, filmmakers, animators, strategists, technologists, and other creators as they strengthen their craft, clarify their voice, and grow into greater creative authorship and leadership.

The Studio extends this long standing mentorship practice into a dedicated developmental container.
